The General Military Court Martial set up by the authorities of the Nigerian Army to try some soldiers of the 111 Special Forces Battalion, Maiduguri, have again condemned four soldiers to death by firing squad. Investigations revealed that the President of the Court, Brig.- Gen Musa Yusuf, found the four soldiers guilty of conspiracy to commit mutiny and thus sentenced them to death. It was learnt that the court condemned the four soldiers to death on December 24, 2014. The GCM had earlier convicted 54 of the 59 soldiers to death after finding them guilty of conspiracy to commit mutiny on December 17, 2014. Five soldiers from the 111 Special Forces Battalion who were tried alongside the 54 for allegedly refusing to obey an order from their Commander, were found to be innocent of the charges and were discharged and acquitted. The Governor of Akwa Ibom State Godswill Akpabio declared that the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan for another term in the office is the only solution to Nigeria’s search for peace. The governor said this in the capital of Akwa Ibom, Uyo, at ​an​ interdenominational ​Church service, broadcasted live on by the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, on January 2, 2015, Friday. The Nigerian Navy accepted a new warship NNS Okpabana on January 2, 2015, Friday, NAN reports. The vessel was donated by the United States government to boost Nigeria’s naval capabilities in the face of security challenges in its waters and the Gulf of Guinea. The ownership of the ship was formally transferred from the U.S.A. to Nigeria in May 2014. It was the second ship donated by the U.S., following the first, NNS Thunder . Chris Olukolade The Nigeria Army will on January 16, 2015 arraign one brigadier-general and 21 other officers before a General Court Martial in Lagos, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, who is a defence lawyer to some of the soldiers confirmed to The PUNCH on Wednesday. While the army authorities have yet to release the charges preferred against the accused, The PUNCH learnt that the officers would go on trial for offences they allegedly committed in line of duty while battling insurgents in the North-East zone of the country.
