Egypt court drops charges against Mubarak

CAIRO (AP) — An Egyptian court on Saturday dismissed criminal charges against former president Hosni Mubarak in connection with the killing of protesters in the 2011 uprising that ended his nearly three-decade reign. Mubarak, 86, was also acquitted of corruption charges that he faced along with his sons Alaa and Gamal. Mubarak was convicted and sentenced to life in prison in 2012, but the verdict was overturned on appeal the following year. Saturday's verdict concludes his retrial along with his two sons, his security chief and six top security commanders, who were all acquitted. Also on trial was businessman Hussein Salem, a longtime Mubarak friend tried in absentia. He too was acquitted. Nearly 900 protesters were killed in the 18-day uprising that ended when Mubarak stepped down, handing over power to the military. Seven drug traffickers Forty-nine-year-old Fred Obi was about to board an Ethiopian Air flight from Abuja to Tel Aviv, Israel with a strange cargo allegedly concealed in his stomach when the law caught up with him. He had ingested 1.594kg of cocaine. 120 killed in mosque bomb explosion No fewer than 120 died and 270 were injured on Friday as the violent Boko Haram sect bombed the 10,000 capacity Kano Central Mosque where the Emir, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, usually leads prayers. About 10 gunmen went on a shooting spree after the blast at the mosque, which is close to the Emir of Kano’s palace. A rescue official, who spoke with Agence France-Presse, put casualty figures at almost 400, adding that 120 were killed and 270 hurt in the three explosions that rocked the mosque. The emir was said to have travelled to Saudi Arabia late on Thursday night from Paris. Witnesses said the incident happened just as residents were getting set for Friday prayers. “The attackers have bombed the mosque.
